Good tour even if you are not into guitars well worth a few hours to see it all
My husband is a guitar player and collector. This tour was more than he had expected. We both really learned so many things about the work that really goes into building a guitar. The talented people and the love they have for the craft certainly shows in their product. This tour was part of my husband's 75th birthday celebration. He found the birthday gift he has been looking for. It is a Gibson Firebird and he is currently waiting to hearing back about the status on fining one or having one made for himself. He is really so excited about getting this guitar to play, enjoy and add to his collection.
The Gibson Factory is a must see in Memphis. Just make sure you pick a time where the plant is actually in operation. We were fortunate to be on the last tour where production was running full blast on that Friday. Production was shutting down at 2:00 PM that day. While the environment is going to be a little more quiet, it would not have been the same as seeing everyone in action. Also, booking directly with Gibson will ave you 1 per person. 11 versus 10 in calling directly.
Great chance to see guitars being made and then time to try out all the ones in the shop. A few things to note - our guide was good but he spoke very, very fast. I don't think a non native English speaker would cope. We're from the UK and we also struggled to understand him and missed quite a bit. Tours sell out fast so we're glad we booked, no tickets available on the day for our 11am tour. Later in the day tours don't get the chance to see the workers hand making the guitars which would be a shame.
