Private Tour of the Naples Royal Palace and Saint Martin Certosa

Overlooking the beautiful Plebiscito square, right in front the Saint Francisco di Paola Basilica, the Royal Palace is one of the most ancient buildings in Naples. It was designed in the first years of the 17th century by the architect Domenico Fontana as the residence of the Spanish viceroy Pedro de Toledo. Then, during the centuries, the central building has been enlarged and new wings have been added to suit the desires of the kings of Naples.

With your guide, you will enter the palace, walk on the marble stairs and pavements, look at the magnificence of the baroque stucco and golden decorations. Room by room, you will hear the stories of the different dominations and royal families, how they gained power and managed to rule this controversial country. You will visit the Small Theatre, the Neoclassical parlor, the Hercules room, the Guards Room – where you will admire the portrait of Maria Carolina di Savoia – and the small Palatine Chapel.

After the visit to the Royal Palace, you will move up to the Vomero hill, to visit the Saint Martin Certosa and the Saint Elmo’s Castle. Both the buildings are dated back to the first French domination – second half of the XIII century. First built to be a fortified residence for the royal family, during the centuries it has become a military fortress, and now it hosts museums and offices.

With your guide you will walk through the old castle corridors, passing by the Church, the New Treasure Chapel. You will see the masterpieces of Luca Giordano and Ribeira, and be impressed by the richness of the baroque style of the cloister.

During the morning it is possible to visit the Nativities and Naval sections, while in the afternoon you will have access to the rooms of the exhibition “Immagini e Memorie di Napoli”, where the famous Strozzi Table is kept.
