Don't use "New York City Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour". Waste of money. If not many people in the bus, drivers are advised to wait until the bus is reasonably filled. Don't rely on time table. Not all buses are available with guides.
From 45+ min waits to no AC on a hot and humid day we were very disappointed. Multiple buses didn’t have audio, tour guides were very hit or miss and we lost a ton of time waiting for buses.
We could not board the bus with the e ticket, this delayed our arrival to Battery Park and we were unable to board the ferry. the entire exercise was a waste of time and money.
The QR code provided did not allow us to board. Fortunately the kind driver did let us get on to go to the next stop, near their offices. We waited a very long time for buses, and saw so many others from other companies go by. We finally got our bus, and the guide was dry and boring, and even rude to some riders.
The tour guides on these buses are all passionate about something; how much we get out of the tour, how much we rappreciate, depends on the degree that their tastes coincide with ours. We had three. One was very knowledgable about NYC architecture, one about history, with anecdotes about famous people that went with the places we saw; one seemed to want to give us a perspective based on living in New York. We got caught in heavy traffic with him and he only talked about people leaving in the Holland Tunnel for the weekend instead of telling us interesting stories like the second guide would have.
Very enjoyable tours around the whole of Manhattan. In hindsight, if you plan well you really get good use out of the hop on hop off aspect, great for going where you want to go and also just to sit and enjoy the sights and take lots of photos. My only niggle was finding the bust stops, its a little hard with all the signage everywhere in NY, they can be missed.
The quality of the experience is totally dependent on the person doing the narration. The first bus we boarded, I found it impossible to understand what the guide was saying, so needless to say, I was not impressed with that leg of my trip. The next two buses had excellent narrators who were easily understood, so that part of the tour was quite enjoyable. The ferry ride was good, but the night tour was really disappointing! Since we were in the Christmas season, we thought that we would see some holiday lights and decorations. That was not the case. When we asked about that, the guide told us that we would have been better served to stay downtown and walk around on our own. Some good points, some not so good.
The convenience of being able to hop on and hop off the bus was a great benefit. We saw a lot more of New York than expected and the onboard commentary was a great help
