This project is unique in the world. It has transformed a municipal rubbish dump into a recreational space for plant lovers, bursting with spectacular plant life brought here through partnerships with institutions from all over the world.

At Palmetum’s gardens bloom the best and most varied range of palms throughout Europe and world’s subtropical islands.

Here you will find roughly 2,000 different sorts of tropical and subtropical plants from all over the world. Thus, the most abundant species is the palm, whose technical name is Arecacea or Palmae, with more than 400 different sorts distributed along the garden according to its geographical origin. Most of Palmetum’s area focuses on islands, therefore, you will mostly find palms originating from places such as Madagascar, the Caribbean or Polynesia.

In the last few years, Palmetum has become the best place in Santa Cruz for birds watching. Over the years, many different native bird species have taken over the place and made it theirs. Some of these birds are easy to be spotted given their exuberance, but others are very difficult to be seen since they are smaller and timorous. This means you will need to be patient and attentive to spot them.
