Our driver met us at the pier and was wonderfully delightful and fluent in English. We told him that we wanted to go to the John Hardy workshop and he recommended that we stop along the way at other less expensive jewelry design studios. We did that for comparisons. After stopping at a few shops, we continued to John Hardy only to find that the prices are fair trade and the same as back home in Chicago. We went back to the other studios for purchases. Our day also included lunch at a resort overlooking the rice paddies. The food was great and service was leisurely. We continued to the Monkey Forest in Ubud. AWESOME!!! The primates were fun to interact with. Great day by taking a private guide for 8 hours.
Excellent value and experience! Our driver, Putu, was wonderful! He was friendly, fun, and knowledgeable, clearly answering our questions on Balinese culture, religion, politics and everything else. It was just my husband and I, so the tour was very personable. Putu was waiting for us when we exited the cruise port. He asked us what we wanted to see and do so we could pace the tour to our liking. Instead of using the busy main highway, he drove us on smaller roads, through small farms and villages. We saw what the locals live like, and also, the beautiful Balinese countryside. Really enjoyed the Monkey Forest! Lovely setting with hundreds of native monkeys...strutting, macho bosses, and wee little babies catching a ride, clutching their mothers bellies. Although the Bail Pulina Coffee Plantation was not something we planned to see, truly enjoyed the experience! One of the hosts of the plantation took us through the charming grounds while explaining the process of making Luwak coffee. Later we sampled a long, complementary tray of their coffees and teas in a traditional Balinese structure overlooking views of rice terraces and the lovely valley. We purchased cups of the specialty Luwak coffee, which beat Starbucks in both quality and price. Putu was always waiting for us with his friendly smile. He made sure we were returned to the cruise port in time to sail. Highly recommend this tour.
